National 3 Peaks 24 Hour Mountain Challenge

Environmental Issues & Concerns

small group policy resulting in minimal environmental erosion

The 3 Peaks has for many years been considered as an event that can attract a huge amount of people and the very nature of the event lends itself beautifully as a vehicle to raise money for charities. Whilst charities are fantastic things, it should be noted that as a result of the 3 Peak Challenge being rigorously marketed as a way for people to raise money for them, there are major consequences particularly on the most common large scale events that are organised for hundreds of people at a time. The 3 mountain areas associated with the challenge are subject to numerous problems with some of these being:

  • Erosion to paths and surrounding soil
  • Litter problems
  • Pollution to streams/lakes due to human feaces
  • Noise issues during night time (especially in Wasdale)
  • Parking issues and damage to verges
  • Road blockages due to vehicles(Wasdale)
  • Pressure on Mountain Rescue services due to poorly prepared and equipped challengers

At 3 Challenges we run our events in a professional manner and have taken into consideration every issue that regulary gives this event a bad name. We have created our own code of conduct that we believe is one where we put the environment, local people and the governing bodies first.

  • Our maximum group size is 24 (3 groups of 8)
  • We only advertise 4 fixed dates per year
  • We try and avoid the busiest weekends
  • Working on a strict 1:8 ratio with highly qualified and experienced instructors & guides.
  • We use professional transport companies with dedicated drivers who don't block roads.
  • 95% of our events are South to North meaning our groups are in Wasdale between 4 and 9pm

The 3 Peak Challenge is only a small part of our companies overall operations and we don't aggresively market this challenge as a main income source as some organisations do. We are proud of the way we operate and believe in time that more people and organisations will not want to be associated with large scale events that quite clearly are having a major impact on the environment and local people and areas. Let's hope that happens soon?
