Scafell Pike 978m – The Lake District Located in a commanding position in the Central Lakeland Fells, at 978metres, Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England but the smallest of the national 3 Peaks. Whichever direction you undertake the National 3 Peaks the ascent of Scafell Pike is always the 2nd or middle peak undertaken. The Route - click here for detailed map During the Scafell Pike phase of the National 3 Peaks the optimum route in terms of distance and safety is by ascending the path along side Lingmell Ghyll past Hollow Stones and then past the behemoth rock face of Scafell to Mickledore. From the Mountain Rescue stretcher box at Mickledore we traverse the rocky plateau easily to the summit for a quick drink, snack and photo before descending back to Wasdale via the Corridor Route and back into Lingmell Beck. On a clear day we can easily see the Dumfries and Galloway coastline in southern Scotland with the majestic hill of Criffel. Looking beyond Sellafield on the Cambrian coast we can pick out the Isle of Man situated in the Irish Sea. During many of the 3 Peaks challenges that we run we go south to north and generally we find the mountain very quiet indeed and in most cases have the place to ourselves. By going south to north there is virtually no disturbance to the local community due to the fact that we start around 4.30/5pm and are off the mountain by 9pm! All of our clients benefit from free use of our top of the range equipment including our Petzl Tikka XP L.E.D head torches (32 in stock). Depending on the time of year a head torch may be necessary particularly on the Scafell Pike section of the challenge. Our torches provide excellent bright light with batteries lasting up to around 100 hours!!
